R policeman full of the authority and corruption of his uniform beats his wife A family’s fortunes fall from love and wealth to infidelity and poverty as poor choices unfurl over three generations With humor and tenderness Barrett introduces us to an utterly modern Nigeria where desire is a means to an end and love is a power as real as mon. Just badI only read the first two stories because neither of them were remotely impressive In fact they were uite bad in my opinion and I felt that if the author couldn t win me over with the first two stories then the book was either a clearly not for me or b the author had seuenced the stories uestionably assuming there were better stories later on the book which is a generous assumptionThe first story The Worst Thing That Happened was a great example of a short story that wasn t a short story The balance was really awful in that the author spent so many words describing characters and things that never impacted or had relevance to the story There is no moral no afterthought and nothing to consider It was just a collection of dry facts and once I was done reading I just thought What was the point of that There s no powerful imagery no poignant prose no understated beauty It s just a bunch of half baked nothingsThe second story Dream Chasers very much follows the author s pointless writing style No rhyme or reason but a sigh of shower thoughts that don t amount to anything Looking back at the title am I really that surprised It s wishy washy and non committal I d give this book a one star rating but I don t rate books that I don t finish because I can t honestly speak to all the contents Anyhow I d avoid this The Black Painting uniform beats his wife A family’s fortunes fall from love and wealth to infidelity and poverty as poor choices Fire and Desire unfurl over three generations With humor and tenderness Barrett introduces The Forgotten Memoir of John Knox us to an The Illusionists utterly modern Nigeria where desire is a means to an end and love is a power as real as mon. Adrian Igoni Barrett was a winner of the BBC World Service short story competition for 2005 His first book a collection of short stories entitled From Caves of Rotten Teeth was first published in 2005 and reissued in 2008 In 2014 he was named on the Africa39 list of writers aged under 40 with potential and talent to define future trends in African literatureHis father is the Jamaican poet and
